THE PASSING OF
My Dear Kirkbyites
This morning Mary Siow rang me at 7.40 to convey the sad news regarding Easvaralingam. She heard the new from Sivaratnam.
I called Easvaralingam’s family and was told that he passed away at 2.00 a.m. this morning. He suffered a heart attack.
Several Kirkbyites had met him very recently. Shan from PD met him on Sunday at a wedding function. Vimala also saw him at this function. Sivaratnam was on the phone with him for a long time two days ago.
Lingam, as we used to call him, was in Block 9 or 11 – I’m not quite sure but I’m inclined to think it was Block 9. Lingam was a very quiet and gentlemanly type, always courteous and friendly.
The first time I met him after Kirkby was at Sau San’s wedding in Seremban. After that I had met him off and on. The last three occasions are vivid in my memory. Some years ago I met him in Seremban, thanks to Shan who made this meeting possible. We had a wonderful time recalling old times and joking. The next time was when Chelva’s son got married. We met up in PD at Shan’s house and then proceeded to Malacca for the wedding. And the final occasion was at Gucharan’s funeral. Incidentally, Lingam’s name appears just above Gurcharan’s name and address on page 61 of the Address Book that was given out at the big Kirkby Reunion in 2001.
I spoke to Lingam’s daughter this morning. The funeral will take place at 4.00 p.m. from his residence in Seremban.
Lingam leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.
