e-mail from Teresa Voon (Tess Chong) (1960/61):

It was "An Affair To Remember", starring 60 Kirkbyites from 3 batches (58-59, 59-60, 60-61) at a lunch/hi-tea at Cititel, KL on 13 January 2008.

The reason for the get-together? An e-mail and some SMS'es to me from Lye Yuen Chew (OC Chairman Kirkby '08 Reunion) regarding fund-raising prompted me to organise this 'do', the purpose of which was to get a collection of $ towards the 08 Reunion Contingency Fund.  Hence, the lunch/hi-tea normally priced at RM20nett for senior citizens came about and a minimum of RM30 (RM10 of which goes to the Fund) was collected from each attendee.

Superstition has it that 13 is an unlucky number, but for us, 13 Jan was a day of twin happiness.  When I contacted Salma Deen to help get her batch (58-59) to attend this occasion, she soon realised that the date that I had chosen was a meaningful , nostalgic date for their batch as it marked the date of departure from KL to Kirkby for some of them and the date of arrival for others exactly 50 years ago.  Salma and Ching Chin Soon rounded up 35 from their batch.  Salma even contacted TV3 and came they did!  The news was telecast the next morning at 7am over TV3.

As expected, munching and crunching, laughing, reminiscing, camera-clicking and catching up - activities that Kirkbyites specialise in were the order of the day.  As usual, past secrets long buried were excavated again for another review.  Familiar old feelings were stirred and strange enough, Kirkbyites never seem to tire of listening to old stories all over again.  To quote Joseph Pillai from Seremban, "This get-together makes us feel so young!".  Sukhdhev Singh and others unhesitatingly agreed.  Well, many of us were behaving like we were still in Kirkby as in days of yore.  In fact, we made such a merry din that other puzzled diners mused upon themselves as to who this motley crowd could be.  Latest newcomer to the Kirkby scene, Philomena James (59-60 batch), was agog with excitement to meet so many Kirkby friends who welcomed her with open arms.

Many thanks too to Salma Deen, Chong Hong Chong and Martin Voon for sacrificing part of their 'makan' time to act as treasurers for the day.

It was a fruitful event too as the day's collection stood at RM700.  This amount has just been sent to the Treasurer '08 Reunion Fund.  Some generous souls from 60-61 and 59-60 batches donated more than RM10.  A big thank-you to all participants without whom this event would not have been possible.

Yes, the Kirkby spirit is very much alive & kicking

As long as Kirkbyites' hearts are still a-beating!

God Bless Us All Always All Ways!

Warmest regards,
